Picking Up Stitches

Buttonbands and collars are commonly finished by picking up stitches along the unfinished edges. The pattern will specify the number of stitches to pick up. Many knitters use the working knitting needle for picking up stitches but, if you’re like me, you may find it much easier to use a crochet hook of the same size. Simply insert the hook through the fabric as instructed below to grab a loop onto the hook. Transfer the loops from the hook onto your knitting needle when the hook becomes too crowded with loops, being careful that the right leg of each loop is in front of the needle for proper stitch orientation, as shown in the illustrations at left.

To ensure an even distribution of picked up stitches, use locking stitch markers to divide the length of the pick-up edge into equal quarters. First, fold the piece in half to locate the midpoint of the edge to be picked up. Then, fold each end to the center and place another marker on each fold to divide the two halves into quarters. When picking up, plan to pick up one-fourth of the stitches in each section. For example, if the instructions say to pick up 84 stitches, pick up 21 in each quadrant.
